Discover the Unique World of Earthbag Domes at the Mojave Center

Superadobe and Earthbag Building Videos

Hey there, adventurous souls! Today, we invite you to join & watch Nicolette and Ian as they take us on an inspiring journey through the Mojave Center, a fascinating educational hub nestled in the heart of the Mojave Desert. Just an hour west of Las Vegas, the Mojave Center offers a glimpse into the world of natural building, desert water harvesting, and sustainable living.

At the Mojave Center, you’ll find a unique collection of earthbag domes. These intriguing structures, built using the dirt found beneath your feet, offer a sustainable and affordable way to create comfortable living spaces that are both earthquake-resistant and flame-retardant. Built in as little as five to eight days, these domes provide an ideal solution for desert dwellers, with their natural thermal mass properties helping to maintain comfortable temperatures inside.

During the construction process, each layer of earthbags is reinforced with barbed wire for added tensile strength and structural integrity. A compass-guided system ensures that the domes maintain their perfect, aesthetically pleasing shape.

But it’s not just the construction that makes these domes remarkable. They also feature a variety of passive cooling techniques, such as wind scoops, which draw in cool air from the top of the building. Skylights provide natural light, and can also be opened to allow hot air to escape, further cooling the interior.

After construction, the domes are finished with a series of plasters and paints to protect the polypropylene bags from degradation. The final result is a cozy, inviting space that showcases the potential of sustainable living and earth-friendly building techniques.

One of the most enchanting spots at the Mojave Center is their shower dome, a magical space with a rain shower that feeds the surrounding plants. This demonstrates the center’s commitment to regenerative water harvesting and desert ecology restoration.

If you’re intrigued by this unique approach to desert living and would like to learn more, be sure to check out the Mojave Center’s website and Instagram for updates on their upcoming workshops and events. Whether you’re a seasoned eco-warrior or just dipping your toes into the world of sustainable living, you’re sure to find inspiration and knowledge at the Mojave Center.
